Blessing.
As Huaraz is situated in an excellent location, right between the wonderful Cordillera Blanca (the White mountain range) and Cordillera Negra (the Black mountain range), today it has become a popular basecamp for people who like trekking, ice-climbing and rock climbing etc.
The city of Huaraz is decorated with greenery.
However, just about 38 years ago, the beauty of the beautiful Cordillera Blanca had brought catastrophic incident to the region.
About 54 Km north of Huaraz, situated just at the foot hill of the higest peak Huascaran was the old Yungay, which was completely destroyed in 1970 because an earthquake triggered off a massive mud avalanche. Within 3 minutes, 20,000 people were buried under the land forever. Only about 100 people who escaped to the old cemetery (a small hill) were able to survive.
Nowadays, for the memory of the incident, the whole old Yungay has become a big memorial park, or a big cemetery more probably, with beautiful flowers planting all over the area.
The destroyed train has now become the monument.
Little girl was playing in the mud-covered catherdal.
The surviver of the avalanche told us how the tradgy happened.
The old cemetery which saved the lives of some of the people here.
Today, a new Yungay is rebuilt north of the old Yungay. Though without the brilliant scenery of the snow-capped Huascaran as the old Yungay had, there is a brand new and charming plaza.
The city of Huaraz is lucky, as the most obvious destruction by the earthquake in 1970 is the Catherdal, and it is still rebuilding.
